We wanted to use Futura for our studio but couldn’t find a cut we liked… so we made one. Didn’t Spiekermann say something about digitized Futura being based on squares and circles but not having any circles?
Oh yes he did… on his blog (thanks Google).
I think there’s a case to be made for re-digitizing many of the early computer versions of classic faces. They were often based on photo-lettering film, not original punches or proofs. Centaur is a classic example; it’s way too light. In general, I’ve found the Bitstream version of Futura to be the best of what’s available.
