Mr. Marianek

Many things can be said (or not said) about Joe Marianek. His work has been around the block and back again. As a good friend and long time supporter of ours, we are thrilled to have him as our 15th (yes 15th) Guest Post’r here. From his twitter description: Designer, Associate Partner at Pentagram, Educator, AIGA Buddy and Skeptical Enthusiast…. that sums him up perfectly.

This week, Joe will take us on a journey through his home state of Ohio.

Highways

Jim Sullivan is a forgotten talent with a great story. He recorded only one album called UFO that is full of songs about driving into the desert and getting abducted by UFOs. He then promptly drove into the desert and was never heard from again, presumably abducted by a UFOs. Amazing. None of this would matter if the songs sucked but finding out about this hidden gem has been one of my great musical joys of the past year. My girlfriend and I recently bought a camper and this is the type treatment I made for the spare tire cover. We too will drive through the desert this summer while singing songs about open highways. If we don’t make it back, you’ll know what happened. – Dan

Coyote

I had to throw some Mom Rock in here, it’s only fair. I can sometimes have a pretty low breaking point for Joni Mitchell, but everything about this live performance at The Band’s The Last Waltz is perfect. The reigning queen of Laurel Canyon (sorry Mama Cass) emerges from a sea of Neil Young’s cocaine snot bubbles and effortlessly rises above the misogynistic manboy’s club that was the 1970’s LA Dad Rock scene. No regrets, indeed. – Dan

The French Inhaler

Poor Warren Zevon. One of the most unique and talented songwriters of the 70’s doomed to be forever associated with that goddamn song about werewolves. But he was a hero, albeit a flawed one, and one of my personal Dad Rock favorites. People like Jim Morrison died with their pants around their ankles thinking they were lizard kings but Warren faced his many demons and his music was the better for it. The man can hollow you out with his lyrics and The French Inhaler has some of his best. He passed away in 2003 after a battle with an untreatable form of cancer but made a final television appearance on David Letterman’s show prior to his death. The two were close friends. When Letterman asked if he now had any insight on life and death Warren responded only with “enjoy every sandwich.” What a dude. – Dan

Roll Me Away

We could all learn something from the simplicity of Bob Seger. All his songs contain some combination of just 4 ingredients: fire, night, restlessness, and relationships that take place inside motor vehicles. He is the Midwest’s Bruce Springsteen. There is a black and white photograph floating around the Internet of a famed meeting between these two kings of Heartland Dad Rock. The photograph is in black and white not because of some rock photographer’s aesthetic choice, but because the combined collars of these two men would create a shade of blue so brilliant no color film would be able to capture it. – Dan
