Empanadas
Digitized & Drawn by Craig Redman
This is one quote from the book ‘Neighbourhood’ (I did 20 quotes for the book inall, all individually pieced together, letter by letter). The type needed to reflect the handcrafted nature of the book and project (remixing stuffed toys) so I created a typeface around the idea of modularized sewing thread forming the letters. – Craig

Hi!
This just sort of happened one day when I was playing around. It’s one of those simple ideas that takes about 10 seconds to execute but seems to stick around forever because it’s friendly and affirmative and delivers it’s message really quickly. Ideally I’d like to build a giant three dimensional version and install it somewhere. – Craig

FoT
When I first started playing around with this typeface I was looking for ways to bring my pattern work into typography. I ended up breakdown the letterforms into modules and filling each with different stripes and colors. The outcome is a little abstracted but still legible which is a nice mix I think. – Craig

Fingered
I was so excited to present this to Nike at the time but they didn’t like it at all. Maybe calling it “Fingered” wasn’t the best strategy. – Craig

T’was a Dark and Stormy Night
This piece was exhibited last month at Compound Gallery in Portland. I started doing this style of type when I was playing around with ideas of incorporating the rainbow swirls I’ve been doing for years and years with typography. I like the freer, blobby nature of the type which is different to my usual snap-to-grid style. It kind of looks candy store-ish but the message is somewhat sinister. – Craig

Craig Redman FoT Guest No.14
Digitized & Drawn by The Friends
It’s time to kickstart our Guest Post’r series again with the one and only Craig Redman. The Australian/NYC’er has been a favorite of ours at FoT since we spotted him a while back when he was part of Rizen (a design and art group based in Australia). Craig’s work is infectiously optimistic and always leaves you wanting more. His keen eye, cultural insight and depictions of life in the city make his other well-known side project Darcel Disapoints a must see. He recently launched a new site, ‘Craig & Karl‘ with long time friend Karl Maier. Take some time to stroll through their collective work which is like an everlasting gobstopper of creative goodness. Craig will be with us all week on FoT with a post a day starting today until Friday.
Make sure to follow him on twitter here: @craigandkarl

Sweet, Young & No.16
Drawn by The Friends
Earlier this year we were asked to participate in a state motto project called Fifty and Fifty curated by the talented Dan Cassaro where we got to represent Michigan handsomely. To return the favor, we’ve given Dan the license to drive this week at FoT as our 16th Guest Post’r. Dan will take us on a journey through the highways and backroads of some of the finest curves seen this side of the Mississippi. He’s included a song for each post which by the end of the week will make for the perfect roadtrip mixtape. We hope you enjoy the ride.
